Why New Mexico needs a science cafe
March 20th, 2007 by Kishore
In this time of war and civil unrest, protests have once again returned to our nations campuses (campusii?). Protests over illegal immigration, treatment of prisoners, and the rising issue of global warming. After years of waiting on the sidelines, the voice we have all been waiting for has chimed in: the New Mexico State University Aggies.
Yes, students in Las Cruces, NM have rallied to the defense of the smallest on the small, the dwarf. The dwarf planet that is. Students recently protested the declassification of Pluto as a planet. Claiming “Size Doesn’t Matter”, students demanded action.
But size does matter to local New Mexico politicians. State Represenative Joni Marie Gutierrez introduced a resolution declaring Pluto a planet. Claiming Pluto’s status is not a science issue, Rep Gutierrez hopes other states will soon follow suit. I doubt it, but here’s hoping to New Mexico being reclassified dwarf…I mean reason challenged state.
I created my science cafe so these ridiculous divides between the public and science communities crumbles. Well, hopefully it won’t crumble too fast…the entertainment value alone is worth it.
And finally for all you male readers, here’s a clip of those NMU students yelling “Size doesn’t Matter” repeatedly.
