Omega-3 Study Completed!

August 10th, 2008 by Kishore

Omega-3s
After 12 weeks, I am finally through with my lenghty omega-3 trial. After weeks of taking 12 pills a day, getting blood drawn, and endless questionairres, I’m ready for some fish. I was positive I had fish oil because of a strange smell with my pills, but I was taking flaxseed Omega-3s the whole time. Guess I was wrong…big time.

It was very difficult making it through the 12 weeks. Easy to let your focus slip, forget to take some pills, or even have some omega-3s. I’m a huge believer in scientific studies, but this weakened my faith. It is just plain hard to run studies on humans, especially humans with the name of Kishore. The study hinged on my honesty and discipline, both of which aren’t in short supply. But I can imagine the situation where someone else “futzes” with the numbers. Now, statistics help weed out of lot of those problems, but still…the lingering question of reliability of these quality of life studies on humans remains.

I’ll get my blood test results in a few weeks, I’ll post the before and after results online. The study itself won’t be complete until the end of the year, so any conclusions will have to wait.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in taking part in a health study, check out: http://nutrition.stanford.edu/

Resources for Your Nutrition

June 19th, 2008 by Kishore

Dr. Gardner mentions in the above clip a number of resources for the average person to get nutrition with a perspective. Perspective, looking at nutrition in the long lens, is one of big takeaways from the evening.

Nutrition Studies @ Stanford
This is how I got involved in the Dr. Gardner’s Omega-3 Trial. There are two active studies ongoing:

- Potential Health Benefits of Plant vs. Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids
- Potential Health Benefits of Dietary Antioxidants from Supplements vs. Foods

There is an online questionnaire, followed by a quick blood screen before qualification is determined.

Berkeley Wellness Letter
This newsletter is run by the School of Public Health and Researchers from UC Berkeley. It was started in 1984 and now boasts more than 350,000 subscribers. The newsletter is completely focused on putting nutrition news in perspective, including historical results in their evaluation. Subscriptions cost $24 for 12 issues (one year).

Center for Science & Public Interest: Nutrition Action Healthletter
Dr. Gardner especially recommended their Food Porn section. This month they give the thumbs up to Barilla Whole Grain Pasta for being forthright about its ingredient. Thumbs down to Rice Dream’s “Chocolate Pie” for hiding a lot of white flour and processed sugar in their natural goodness filling.

The Nutrition Action Newsletter is run by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. CSPI was founded in 1971 by Michael Jacobson. This is the man that coined the phrase “junk food” and “empty calorie”. He is known for aggressive stance against processed food, pushing for increasing transparency of whats in your food.

Dr. Clyde Wilson
Dr. Wilson is an active UCSF researcher who maintains a personal website dedicated to enhancing nutrition education for the masses. His site is filled with motivational stories.

He trains elite athletes at UCSF and Stanford and provides recommendations for elite athletes. From Gatorade to chocolate milk, he holds the answers for you.

My Carbon Foodprint

June 17th, 2008 by Kishore

Foodprint Calculator

One of my chief takeaways from last night’s event: there are so many motivations to made the food choices we do. Health, Disease Prevention, Pleasure, Culture, Environmental to name a few. It was mildly shocking to hear Christopher mention that under current research conditions, nutritional science will never answer what foods are better for you long term (i.e. broccoli vs meat). It make sense when you consider no people will enter a 40 year trial eating only broccoli or meat.

He did say thinking about the environmental choices is increasingly a good way to choose what to eat.

Here’s what I ate yesterday:
2 Diet Cokes
1 Grapefruit
1 English Muffin
Chicken & Cheese Burrito
Half Smoked Turkey Sandwich
3 Lost Coast Downtown Brown Beers

Hey, it’s certainly not the healthiest, but that’s how I did traveling. According to the Carbon Foodprint Calculator (they didnt have options for my beer or diet coke), I had about 2500 CO2e points. That translates to 5.5 lbs of CO2 per year. According to their figures, I did alright (just below average).

KQED QUEST just ran a radio piece on eating a low carbon diet. Listen to the report below:

The piece has spawned a few choice comments from vegan/vegetarian listeners. Check out their comments here.

Week 3: Omega-3 Study - Sushi how I miss thee

May 28th, 2008 by Kishore

Sushi

It’s week three of my omega-3 study (first 4 weeks is cleansing, 8 weeks on fish oil, flax oil, or a placebo). For the duration, no fish, no flax, no walnuts, and limited soy.

My fiance and I having been working through our food, eating all the stuff that has piled up over the year. Yesterday, I opened up the freezer…pretty much all we have left is some frozen green beans, fish sticks, and some tilapia. Fun for me. On the plus side, we have plenty of walnuts…oh wait.

Later on, I walked by Sushi Rock…not the greatest sushi in the world, but boy did it look good today. Saw someome slowly popping a Tuna Roll w/tobiko…I’m a sucker for tobiko. Pained me.

It had me wonder…I’m struggling to avoid omega-3s 3 weeks in…how the heck do they get 150 people to do this without failure? I’m asking on my next visit. I have to imagine they account for “cheating” somehow in the statistical analysis. The holes in the study being to emerge….

Until next week…I’m off to stare at those year old fishsticks.

Omega-3 Study: Week One

May 16th, 2008 by Kishore

Fish Oil

This week I started a 12 week trial on the efficacy of omega-3s in lowering inflammation. The trial is being run by Dr. Christopher Gardner, our speaker for the July science cafe. Over the next 12 weeks, I’ll be detailing my experience so you’ll be able to put a human face to all these food studies. I’ll be posting weekly notes, hopefully without too much complaining.

And for those who are curious, I am getting no compensation for this study (other than access to my detailed bloodwork).

Background on the study:
Chief reason behind the study is heart disease. We’re used to the bad cholesterol to heart disease relation (LDL), but in recent years that view has changed slightly. Most experts think inflammation (moderate long term inflammation) has a significant role in heart disease (atherosclerosis) as well.

Well where does inflammation come from? It’s not from bumping your knee….its a long term situation. The symptoms are varied but most will sound familiar: high LDL, elevated triglycerides, high blood pressure, etc. Sources are poor diet, smoking, genetics, smoking, poor environmental health conditions, smoking.

Fast forward to Omega-3s. There are two different omega-3s in a typical diet: linolenic acid (found in flax, walnuts, soy) & EPA/DHA (found in fish). Through a complex (and not totally understood series of reactions), the omega-3s mimic hormones…the result reduces inflammation, coagulation, and they don’t trigger immune response…all very good things when considering heart disease.

/End Background

On my initial screen, I came out with slightly elevated triglycerides, an indicator of some oxidative stress. Woo hoo…my stress may be the study’s gain. So I went to an hour long informational session. For the next 12 weeks, I will have to take pills at lunch and dinner (up to 12/day!) with either Fish Oil (EPA/DHA), Flax (linolenic acid), or a placebo (safflower oil). In addition, I can’t have any fish (shellfish included), flax, and reduce my intake of soy & walnuts. 12 WEEKS!

Day 1 was Tuesday. Went in for a quick blood draw, 20 ccs (BTW A normal blood draw is about 200ccs). Of course, nurse missed my vein, so I have a nice bruise to show for it. But another nurse came over and cleaned up the mess and I was on my way. I’m in the “clean out” phase, a 4 week period before I start to take pills. So far it hasn’t been too tough, but I’ll be aching for sushi soon I’m sure.
